  • The Reverend Basil Henry Davies
    Born in Rochdale, June 1879 the son of Henry and Mary. Henry was the Curate of St Albans, Lancashire. The census of 1881, 1891 and 1901 all show Basil living with his mother and father in a Rochdale vicarage. Basil was educated at Manchester Grammar School, Clifton College, Bristol and Lincoln College, Oxford, receiving a BA in 1901, then an Honours in Theology the same year. He was ordained in 1903.     William John and Kate Cornish had eight children, four boys and four girls. Mary Caroline (Carrie), born 1883; Phillippa, born 1885; William Thomas, born 1887; Emma Jane, born 1889; John Henry, born 1892; Francis James, born 1894; Harry, born 1897; Hilda Kate, born 1900. In the 1901 Census, all the family are living in St Wenn with the exception of Mary who is a servant to the Lobb family on Polmorla Farm. Father William is a carpenter.     Samuel was born in the parish of Withiel in 1879 to William and Elizabeth (nee Osborn). The Census of 1881 shows Samuel with his parents on Lanjew Farm along with his brothers Richard, William, Harry and sister Mary. His father is a farm labourer. For the Census of 1891, Samuel is with his parents along with his brother Fred (aged nine), sister Fanny (aged four) and baby sister Bessie (aged nine months).     John was born in St Wenn 1877, the second son of James Chapman and Margaret (nee Rowe). John had eight brothers and two sisters, James born 1875; Reuben, born 1881; Rose, born 1883; Stephen, born 1885; Walter, born 1887; Sidney, born 1889; twins Charles and William, born 1892; Matty, born 1893; Thomas, born 1894. The census of 1881, John is with his mother,  father,  brothers James and Reuben in Rosenannon. Similarly, the census of 1891 shows the family, growing larger in Rosenannon.     Thomas was born in 1895 the son of Thomas and Mary Stephens who already had a daughter Florence, born in 1893. The census of 1901 shows our Thomas with his sister Florence living with his mother and father in Tregonetha. Also with the family is Thomas’s grandfather, another Thomas, a widower aged 79. His father is a farmer. In 1911, the family is still resident in Tregonetha. Father Thomas is described as a farmer, Thomas junior is working on the farm and Florence is carrying out dairy work.   • William Francis Brenton
    William was born in October 1884 to Francis and Emma Brenton. He was the uncle of Cyril Brenton who passed away two years ago in 2012. Cyril lived in and around Tregonetha all his life and was a much loved and respected friend, Churchwarden and Bell Captain of this Church for many years. In the 1901 census William is living with his mother and father in Tregonetha along with his brothers John, Arthur, Ralph and Samuel. His father was a self-employed Blacksmith.     Francis and Emma Brenton had five sons: John Henry, born 1893; William Francis, born 1894; Arthur, born 1896; Ralph, born 1897; and Samuel, born 1899. In the 1901 Census, they are all living in Tregonetha, their father Francis is a blacksmith. The 1911 Census shows John Henry and William Francis on their aunt and uncle’s William and Annie Chapman Pawton Springs Farm.     William was born in St Wenn 1898, the second son of Richard and Lavinia Collet. The census of 1901 shows William with his mother and father on Pengelly Farm with brothers Harry (aged six) and Richard (aged one) and sister Edith Jane (aged four). Also listed with the family is Charles Henry Buscomb, described as a cattleman aged sixteen. A third son John Vivian is born in 1909. The census of 1911 shows  the family still farming Pengelly.     William was born in 1898 in London, the son of William Marshall and Elizabeth Mary Earwood. William and Elizabeth had a second child in London, a daughter Elsie Jane born in December1899. In 1900/1901 William and Elizabeth returned to William’s birthplace and the Census of 1901 sees them with their two children William and Elsie living on William’s parents farm Little Skewes. His parents are Marshall and Jane Blake. The Census of 1911 shows William Marshall with his parents farming at Kernich.     William was born in 1888 St Wenn, the son of Thomas and Nanny (nee Stephens). The Census of 1891 and 1901 show William with his parents living in St Wenn. His father Thomas is a farmer. It would seem there were no further children. Thomas died in June 1902 and his mother Nanny in August 1908. They are both buried in St Wenn churchyard.     The German peace delegation arrived at the railway siding in Compiegne Forest, near Paris on the 8 November 1918. The Allied delegation were awaiting them in the coach where the negotiations and signing would take place. The Allied Supreme Commander Ferdinand Foch believed there was no need to discuss terms and that he expected the Germans to accept the terms and sign the Armistice without prolonged discussions.     Cancelled for 2020 The St Wenn Community Project has decided to cancel the Garden Show dueto be held on Saturday 1 st August. It was a difficult decision to make but as weincur several pre-Show expenses we were reluctant to spend money if theshow couldn’t go ahead. As you know we also rely on sponsorship anddonations of raffle prizes from many local businesses and we feel now is notthe time to be asking for any special favours.
